Dr. Vern Starks
ECX Chief Veterinarian

Vern

Dr. Vern Starks graduated from University of Missouri in 1965. He and his wife Mimi and baby Eric moved to Ketchikan , Alaska in 1967 to pioneer a full time veterinary practice where none existed before.

Fishing and hunting was great and it was an ideal place to raise three sons. With his floatplanes he extended those services to logging camps, native villages, and adjacent southern southeast Alaska towns.

In Ketchikan, Vern was active in Boy Scouts, Science Fair, Past President of Rotary, and was Citizen of the Year for 1998. He has been a trail vet on the Iditarod since 1989. He has worked with the Yukon Quest since 2001 and was the Head Veterinarian for that race in 2006 and 2007.

He set up the veterinary program for the Eagle Cap Extreme Race based in the mountains of northeast Oregon and has served as Chief Veterinarian since the beginning in 2005. He has also worked on the Can-Am race in Maine and the Cascade Quest race in Washington State. He served nine years on the International Sled Dog Veterinary Medical Association Board.

Dr. Randy Greenshields
Veterinarian

Randy

Dr. Randy Greenshields considers himself fortunate to call Wallowa County, Oregon his home for the past 14 years. He is co-owner of the Double Arrow Veterinary Clinic in Enterprise and enjoys the variety that a small-town, mixed-animal practice provides. Dr. Greenshields and his wife, Jeni, cannot think of a better place to raise their four children: Brooke (14), Damon (12), Brett (9), and Landon (6). They have a few acres out of town where they enjoy their 3 dogs, a cat, 4 horses, several cows, chickens, and an occasional orphaned bison. Dr. Greenshields also enjoys camping with his family as well as hiking and bowhunting in the high mountains of the Eagle Cap Wilderness area.

Dr. Greenshields is a 1994 graduate of Washington State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. Prior to that, he received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, WA where he met his future wife, Jeni, on his first day of school.

This is Dr. Greenshields’ fifth year working the Eagle Cap, being a trail veterinarian since its beginning. He also serves on the race’s Board of Directors and is the Eagle Cap Extreme’s vice-president this year.

Dr. Dean Bauman

Bauman

Dr. Bauman, with his wife Mary, have a veterinary practice in Newport, Oregon.

Dr. Bauman treats both large and small animals and sees patients in his clinic as well as making house and farm calls.

He served in Viet Nam as a veterinarian and traveled to Iceland with Keiko (of Free Willy fame). He is proud to have served on the veterinary teams in the 2008 and 2009 Iditarod and will be heading back for the 2010 race. He really enjoys his professional career.

He is a pilot and has flown since he was 16 years old......recently completed a solo flight back to Alva, OK to celebrate the 50th anniversary of his first solo flight from that airport. He loves flying, a good game of cribbage, cowboy poetry and especially his family.
