About Us

The Eagle Cap Extreme is a 100 mile eight dog team race and a 200 mile twelve dog team race that, among other things, acts as an official qualifier for both the Iditarod and the Yukon Quest races.

The ECX team provides a premier sporting event for mushers and their teams through some of the most scenic and rugged country in the US.  The race runs through the 'Hells Canyon National Recreation Area' and Wallowa-Whitman National Forest adjacent to the Eagle Cap Wilderness.

Both races  (run concurrently) start at Ferguson Ridge Ski Area, just east of the town of Joseph, Oregon.  The 100 mile race runs on the Imnaha River to the Ollokot Checkpoint (50 mile mark) where the teams have a mandatory 6 hour layover; then returns to Ferguson Ridge Ski Area.  The 200 mile race follows the same trail for the first 50 miles then continues on and loops around back to the Ollokot Checkpoint (100 mile mark) where the teams have a mandatory 6 hour layover.  Following a similar trail, they return to Ferguson Ridge Ski Area for the finish.

The ECX organization strives to maintain a reputation of integrity.  Throughout all Eagle Cap Extreme sponsored activities, the main concern is safety for mushers, dogs, race staff, and spectators.  Our mission statement is "Helping Mushers Succeed" with our main goals being to focus on safety, enriching mushers' experience in their sport, educating the community about sled dogs and racing, and providing a unique, family friendly event for our community that will stimulate our local winter economy.  Currently the Eagle Cap Extreme has fifty four paid corporation members, nearly two hundred volunteers, and approximately seventy sponsors.

Eagle Cap Extreme operates as a 501 (c) (3) Non-Profit Corporation and all donations and contributions are tax deductible to the extent allowed by the law.
